Ribose-5-phosphate isomerase

Ribose -5 -phosphate isomerase (RPI) is the enzyme that ribose 5 -phosphate and ribulose 5-phosphate is converted into one another. This reaction equilibrium is a partial step of the pentose phosphate pathway in almost all living things, and the carbon dioxide assimilation in plants. A lack of RPI by mutations in RPIA gene in humans is rare and causes leukodystrophy and peripheral neuropathies due to accumulation of ribitol and arabitol.

Catalysed reaction equilibrium

Ribulose -5-phosphate is rearranged to ribose -5-phosphate and vice versa. The di-and triphosphates are accepted as substrate.
