Richard Baker (Scottish politician)

Richard Baker ( * May 29, 1974 in Edinburgh) is a Scottish politician and member of the Labour Party.

Life

Baker was born the son of a vicar Episcopal and an English teacher. He's godson of Archbishop of the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney. Baker attended the Cowdenbeath Primary School in Cowdenbeath, St Bee's School in Cumbria and then studied English literature at the University of Aberdeen. Between 1998 and 2000, Baker was elected president of the National Union of Students Scotland. He is a member of the trade union Amicus. Baker is married to his party colleague Claire Baker. Together they have a daughter.

Scottish Parliament

In the Scottish Parliament elections in 2003 Baker was a candidate in the constituency of Aberdeen South. He received the second highest number of votes behind the Liberal Democrats Nicol Stephen, and thus missed the direct mandate. Since Baker, however, was also placed on the second rank of the Regional Evaluation of the Labour Party for the election of North East Scotland, he received as a result of the election results a list of the seven seats of the constituency and moved into the Scottish Parliament. In the following elections in 2007 and 2011, he defended his position.
