Richard C. Atkinson

Life

Atkinson began as a professor of psychology at Stanford University. There he worked with Patrick Suppes to teach children in primary schools of Palo Alto using computers mathematics and reading. This resulted in the Education Program for Gifted Youth.

Then left Atkinson 's career as a researcher and turned to the administrative duties of a university. He was director of the National Science Foundation, Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego, and president of the University of California system.

Atkinson was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Education, and the American Philosophical Society.
