Richard Claverhouse Jebb

Sir Richard Claverhouse Jebb, OM ( born August 27, 1841 in Dundee, † December 9, 1905 in Cambridge ) was a British classical scholar and politician.

Life

Jebb was born in Dundee in Scotland. His father was a prominent lawyer, his grandfather judge. Jebb attended the Charterhouse School in Surrey, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was senior classic in 1862 and 1863 a member and tutor. From 1869 to 1875 he was a public speaker at Cambridge University and then accepted a position at the University of Glasgow; before ( 1874) he married the U.S. General Adam J. Slemmer 's widow. In 1889 he returned to Cambridge, where he held the Regius Chair of Gräzistik and held until his death.

1891 Jebb was elected deputy of the University of Cambridge in 1900 and knighted. Shortly before his death, he was inducted into the Order of Merit in 1905.
