Richard E. Nisbett

Richard E. Nisbett ( born June 1, 1941) is an American psychologist. He is a professor at the University of Michigan.

Life

Nisbett studied psychology at Tufts University (AB, 1962) and a doctorate in 1966 from Columbia University. The next five years he was an assistant professor at Yale University. Since 1971 he is professor at the University of Michigan.

Work

Nisbett's research focused on the thinking and reasoning of lay. Here he examined in particular cognitive distortion and the question of how this can be reduced by learning. Nisbett also examines cultural differences in thought processes.
