Richard Haking

Sir Richard Cyril Byrne Haking, GBE, KCB, KCMG ( January 24, 1862 *, † June 9, 1945 ) was a British general and served most recently as General Officer Commanding (GOC ) in Egypt ( 1923-1927 ). He was High Commissioner in the Free City of Danzig ( 1921-1923 ).

Haking struggled at the beginning of the First World War on the Western Front. He led in September 1914, the 5th Brigade of the Marne and the Aisne and took over on December 21, 1914, the leadership of the 1st Division at Gheluvelt in Flanders. End of 1914 moved his division to the La Bassée front and was involved from May 9, 1915 at the Battle of Auber.

In August 1915, he took over the leadership of the newly formed British XI. Corps, which came during the Battle of Loos already in the following month is used. Between November 1917 to March 1918 Hakings Corps was also used on the Italian front against the Austrians. As of April 1918 his troops were at the Lys again and fought to end war in space Artois.

1919 served Haking as commander of the British Military Mission in Russia and the Baltics. But by 1920 he was in Gdansk British commander of the Allied troops for the referenda in the wake of the Treaty of Versailles in the province of East Prussia and parts of the province of West Prussia.

From 1921 to 1923 Haking served as High Commissioner of the League of Nations for the Free City of Danzig.

As a GOC Haking commanded the British troops in the Kingdom of Egypt (1923-1927) and was then retired.
