Richard L. Heschl

Richard Ladislaus Heschl ( born July 5, 1824 in Welsdorf at Fürstenfeld (Styria ), † May 26, 1881 in Vienna ) was an Austrian anatomist.

Heschl studied in Vienna and received his PhD in 1849. 1850 he was first assistant to Carl von Rokitansky, in 1854 professor of anatomy at the medical-surgical College in Olomouc and 1855 Professor of Pathological Anatomy in Krakow.

In 1861 he became a professor at the Graz medical-surgical educational institution, where he was appointed Professor in 1863. From 1864 to 1865 he was rector of the University of Graz.

In 1875 he became a professor at the University of Vienna.

According to him the " Heschl (transverse) turns " were (lat. temporal gyri transverse processes; Also: " Heschl'scher gyrus " ) named. The Heschl's turns are in the primary auditory cortex.
