Richard Payne Knight

Richard Payne Knight ( * February 15, 1750, † April 23, 1824 ) was a British art connoisseur, collector and amateur archaeologist (Member of the Society of Dilettanti ).

His grandfather had been made ​​rich by the rise of the iron industry in Shropshire. The father of Richard Payne Knight was a clergyman. He was a sickly child and was never sent to the university. From 1767, he made ​​several trips to Italy.

Richard Payne Knight has become known for its archaeological and aesthetic writings. Nikolaus Pevsner, art historian and profound knowledge in the field of architectural history, dedicated to him in his book Architecture and design even has its own chapter.
