Nicholas Penny

Nicholas Penny ( born 1949 ) is an English art historian and museum curator.

Nicholas Penny studied at St Catharine 's College, Cambridge and at London's Courtauld Institute of Art, where he received his doctorate in 1975. From 1975 to 1982 he taught art history at the University of Manchester. After that, he worked at King's College, Cambridge. From 1980 to 1981 he was a " Slade Professor of Fine Art " at the University of Oxford. He was curator of the Department of Western Art at the Ashmolean Museum.

Since 2000 he is " Andrew W. Mellon Professor " at the National Gallery of Art 's Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. At the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC He was appointed " Senior Curator of Sculpture " 2002. Since 2008 he is director of London's National Gallery.
