Ridge (roof)

As the ridge (short ridge) refers to the mostly horizontal top edge of a gable roof or other roof shapes. With arched and round, barrel-shaped roof structures of the First runs at the apex of the arch.

Word origin

The origin of the word is the German First on First = First, Supreme Prince ( OHG = Furisto the first to see engl first = first, first.) Due; the term has been transferred here linguistically on the top line of a house.

Features

In most cases, the ridge is horizontal, but it can, like the eaves, run with a positive or negative gradient. One then speaks of a rising or falling ridge. This particular case makes the Spaulders and the joinery of the roof very demanding.

The roof covering the ridge consists in pan tiled roofs of the ridge tiles or ridge tiles. The ridge of a roof tile is placed either in mortar or with dry elements screwed (dry ridge). The First as the highest point of a roof can also take on the function of the roof vent.

Legal planning significance

Within building is often the ridge height, as the eave height, an important building specification with which the planning legal admissibility of a construction project is assessed. Only with knowledge of the ridge and eaves heights of the clearance surfaces for the gable end of a building can be determined.
