Rigobert Bonne

Rigobert Bonne (* 1727 in Raucourt in the Ardennes, † 1795 in Paris) was a French mathematician and cartographer. About the maps created by him beyond Bonne is known today primarily as a name for the fake - cylindrical map projection, the projection Bonn ash.

Life and work

Born in Raucourt in the Ardennes in 1727 Bonne initially worked as an engineer geographer and mathematics teachers. In 1762 he published the exported in Mercator projection Atlas Maritime his first atlas. In 1771 he published in the publishing of the engraver Jean Lattre in Paris a large number of cards in which he aspired high cartographic accuracy and later - have been combined in the modern so-called Atlas - together with the works of other French cartographers.

In 1773 Bonne was appointed as the successor to Jacques -Nicolas Bellin for Engineering Hydrographer of the French Dépot de la Marine. 1776, he was nominated for his achievements in the field of sea cartography to the highest engineering Hydrographer of the French Navy.

Bonnes 1780 in Geneva, published in Atlas de toutes les parties du globe terrestre connues Histoire Philosophique et Politique completed the establishment du Commerce et dans les deux Indes Européens of the Abbé Raynal. Together with Nicolas Desmarêt published Bonne 1783 Atlas de Geographie Ancienne. At the request of the Geneva publisher Charles -Joseph Panckoucke Bonne created in the years 1787 and 1788 together with the Atlas Desmarêt encyclopedique as a supplement to the Encyclopédie méthodique, the reworking of the famous Encyclopédie. In the preface to the Atlas encyclopedique Bonne described the design of the cards by the later named after him Bonn ash projection.

In 1789, Joseph replied Bernard de Chabert, the chief inspector of Dépot de la Marine, Bonne against his will into retirement. Six years later Rigobert Bonne died in Paris. In 1827, more than thirty years after the death Bonnes Atlas encyclopédique appeared in a new edition. Even in the 19th century came the Bonn ash projection in numerous atlases for use; towards the end of the 19th century it was finally replaced by projection method with a lower angle distortion.
