One sits in good company at long tables, on which there are bowls of rice. For this purpose, up to 40 different dishes out, usually varies with meat, fish, vegetables, and salads. The Indian influence of the Spice Islands is reflected in the often seasoned with curry dishes. Everyone at the table served themselves with rice and costs a little by all courts. This feast is traditionally eaten with the fingers.

The Dutch Rijsttafel should not be confused with the altjavanischen tradition of selamatan. The selamatan goes back to Hindu- Javanese, perhaps even on Hindu budditische traditions. It refers to a vorislamisches food offerings, which the family organizations today follow with a meal at certain religious but also secular occasions.
