According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 72.6 km ², of which 65.4 km ² of land and 7.2 km ² ( 9.92% ) is water.

According to the census of 2000, there are 12,396 people, 4,108 households, and 3,446 families residing in the city. The population density is 189.5 inhabitants per km ². 93.87 % of the population are White, 1.61 % African American, 1.44 % Native American, 1.19 % Asian, 0.01 % Pacific Islander, 0.67 % from other races, and 1.21% mixed race. 4.25% are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
