The Avon [ eɪvən ] ( Britannic avon "river ") is a 96 km long river in the south of England in the county of Hampshire.

Course

The Avon rises in the county of Wiltshire, near the village Devizes, flows through Amesbury, Salisbury, Fordingbridge and Ringwood and ends in Christchurch in the county of Dorset in the English Channel.

The Avon overcome a height difference of 150 m. Among the tributaries include Bournemouth, Wylye and Stour. The Avon is no longer navigable today; In the 17th century the river was built up over a distance of 58 km between Salisbury and Christchurch and was opened in 1684 for the shipping. However, in the 18th century, the traffic eased; also destroyed recurrent floods, upgrading work.
