River Dee, Wales

The Dee at Llangollen

The Dee (pronounced Die), Welsh Afon Dyfrdwy, is a 110 km long river in northern Wales, which flows into the Irish Sea.

The Dee rises in the county of Gwynedd on the slopes of Dduallt in Snowdonia and flows over a short distance to Balasee. From there, the river turns to the north-east of the village of Corwen and then east to Llangollen over. In the Vale of Llangollen the Dee flows through it under the built by Thomas Telford in 1805 for the Shropshire Union Canal, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

After Dee has left the Welsh mountain region, it flows in turns northward through the plains of Cheshire at Chester; Chester behind the river was channeled. The mouth of the Dee is 19 km long and 8 km wide, very shallow with sandbars and marshes; the main town on the estuary is Flint.
