The River Monnow (Welsh Afon Mynwy ) is a river in south-west Herefordshire (England) and in the east of Monmouthshire in Wales. The Welsh name of the River " Myn - wy " means fast water. The entire length of the flow is approximately 42 km.

Border river

For much of its small length of the Monnow forms the border between England and Wales, before flowing into the River Wye in Monmouth. The Wye is in there, up to its confluence with the River Severn at Chepstow, also half English. In Monmouth performs a medieval stone arch bridge that Monnow Bridge, across the river.

Source in the Black Mountains

The river springs from the northeastern slopes of the 677 m high mountain Hay Bluff, near the Offa 's Dyke Path, about 3 km west of Craswall, on the English north-east side of the Black Mountains. From there, it flows south and takes the inflows Escley Brook, Olkhon Brook at Clodock and Afon Honddu of the Welsh side of the Black Mountains, near Pandy on. Thereafter, the flow is directed towards the east shortly before it flows back to the south. At Monmouth he opens as 500 m and the Trothy, in the River Wye. The 65- km hiking trail Monnow Valley Walk follows the river.

Brook trout

The Monnow was once known for its abundance of brook trout; between the towns of Pontrilas and Skenfrith record catches were made. During the 20th century, especially since the 1960s, but a significant drop in the fish population was recorded. More recently, the stock rebounded dramatically, so that the catchment area of the Monnow is once again one of the best fishing areas in England and Wales, and even to the stock of grayling ( salmon) was known. A created in Monmouth Fischweg allows migratory fish to pass a previously insurmountable resistance. Salmon and trout have so again access to the majority of the catchment area of the river, and in 2008 at a weir in Kentchurch jumping salmon were spotted after a long time. The Monnow Rivers Association has through its work on the improvement of habitats in the catchment area a large contribution to the positive development of the fish population and the conditions for fishing, especially by their invitation to the fishermen, sure to set a high proportion of fish caught in the water again.
