Rize Tea

As Rize tea refers to a variety of black tea, whose cultivation area is located in north-eastern Turkey on the Black Sea and in the Kaçkar Mountains. The name has the tea from the province of Rize, which is the main growing area.

The tea is traditionally cooked in so-called Çaydanlık and served in small tea glasses.

History

The first attempts to grow tea in Turkey, were made ​​in 1787. For seeds of the tea plant from Japan were imported and cultivated in the province of Bursa. However, since the climate in the region did not allow the desired yield, the tea cultivation was discontinued there.

In 1917, the botanist Ali Riza Bankrupts, then also deputy head of the Halkalı Ziraat Mektebi alisi, a college of agriculture and farming in Istanbul, sought a suitable region and Turkey to the north-east for the cultivation of tea has identified. On February 16, 1924, the Parliament approved the application to grow tea in Rize. The first tea factory was built in 1947, which the tea production has accelerated many times over.
