Rizgar Mohammed Amin

Rizgar Muhammad Amin ( * 1957 in Sulaymaniyah; occasionally Dadschar Mohammed Amin ) is an Iraqi lawyer. The independent Kurd was chairman of the five-member special tribunal in the trial of Saddam Hussein.

Hailing from a respected Kurdish family amine studied law in Baghdad. After completing his studies he returned to his native town of Sulaymaniyah, where he worked as a judge and lawyer. Because of his refusal to join the Baath Party, he worked though initially only in subordinate positions. Since the broad autonomy of the Kurdish part of Iraq Amin became increasingly influence: In quick succession he became Deputy President of the Court of Appeal and finally President of the Regional Criminal Court.

Amin had been appointed in 2004 under strict confidentiality of Jalal Talabani in the Iraqi Special Tribunal. The Presidency amine in the Tribunal had only been announced for his own safety immediately to start the process. Amine, besides Raid Dschuhi, so far the only one of the five judges, which has become known by name.

After two of the defenders of Saddam Hussein fell victim to attacks, a transfer of the proceedings to the more stable Kurdish region was considered by the court.

On January 14, 2006 reported the BBC that he had submitted his resignation as a judge in the trial of Saddam Hussein.

Amine lives with his wife Nazarin Ahmed (born 1962) and her four children in Sulaymaniyah.
