Roar is an American animal and adventure film from 1981, and deals with the experiences of a researcher and his family with wild lions and other big cats.

Action

The American naturalist Hank has entirely to the study of wild big cats prescribed. In order to pursue his studies better, he has retreated to the solitude of the African savannah, and for three years now already lives there with his animals. He has managed the one hand, all the big cats that are out there in the world - ie not only the African species such as lion and leopard, also tigers, jaguars and pumas - to gather in one place where they live together in harmony; on the other hand it is recognized even in all cats as member of the pack and lives in direct contact with the animals - without cages, fences or whips.

The idyll is, however, a little confused, when Hanks family will announce a visit to Savannah. Through a misunderstanding with respect to the arrival time to miss Hank and his family. While he is still on the way to the airport, his family is already on the way to his ranch. As a result, Hanks wife Madeleine and his children are not received by him but by a pack of lions, tigers and other cats.

Apparently unaware of how closely Hank lives with his animals that frighten family tries to bring himself by any means before the supposedly dangerous animals in security and hide in the most unlikely places before them. The trusting cats, however, see in all of this just a fun game that want to play with them the newcomers. From this arises a series of bizarre and comical situations.

The situation is complicated even more by a solitary lion, trying to be included in Hanks pack, but dealing with people is not used and thus is really dangerous. In addition, a trigger-happy and rapacious big-game hunter has the cat vowed vengeance because he was slightly injured during a visit by a tiger.

Background

The concept of the film was at the time of the creation unique. Not only that merge together and practically all existing big cats in one place has never been done in the form. Also, the open interaction between humans and animals is hardly anywhere to be seen in the scope and depth otherwise. This results partly spectacular scenes, and it revealed a familiarity that would be the dreaded big cats do not usually accuse.

The film cost 17 million dollars in its production, but this is mainly due to the long production life of 5 years ( other sources speak of 11). The occupation was carried out primarily by amateur actors - including Noel's sons John and Jerry - and unknown actors. The only exceptions to this are Tippi Hedren and her daughter Melanie Griffith, but which was at the time still at the beginning of her career.

The production was under an unlucky star. Through close contact with the animals, the actors severe injuries such as scratches and scrapes, bruises and even broken bones wore them again and again. Such situations arose not through aggression of animals towards humans, but simply by the enormous forces of the big cats, for which the human body is not designed, coupled with the initial inexperience of the actors in dealing with the animals. In addition, there have been setbacks, such as fires, floods, accidents, as well as a severe viral disease, died at the number of cats.

Since the film only grossed 2 million dollars at the box office, it counts, in spite of its uniqueness, the largest cinema flops of all time. Through the familiar cast of main characters, some critics thought ironically, this film was the most expensive home video of all time.
