Assassination

On November 24, 1994 Rob Scholte lost both legs by the explosion of a car bomb on the chassis of his blue BMW in the Laurierstraat in Amsterdam. The writer Joost Zwagerman In 1989 his novel " gimmick " was published, in which he portrayed the art scene in Amsterdam as a melting pot of drugs, gambling debts and money laundering. This novel was at the time of the attack on Rob Scholte a breeding ground for rumors of all kinds, and it circulated theories about connections Rob Scholtes in the seedy underworld of the Amsterdam underworld. The attack was seen as retaliation for that he had not complied with certain obligations.

Rob Scholte suspected the culprit among his fellow artists.

"To my mistakes, it was that I was not modest ," he says self-critical. "I provoked my friends. Envy came on. Hatred. Holland is a country without mountains. If there is too high also grows, it is nuked. "

He spoke publicly against accusations from fellow artists, such as the poet Koos Dalstra, which in turn sued him for libel and won the case. Rob Scholte instructed the detective Jeroen van Oostveen, to collect more information. To date, the assassination has not been definitively elucidated; the investigation was discontinued in 2002.

The official police investigations assume that the attack was in force a lawyer named Oscar Hammerstein, who also drove a blue BMW 325i, yet also with a similar number plate as Scholtes car. These similarities should have led to confusion on the part of the perpetrator, especially as the other BMW was parked near the Laurierstraat.
