Robert Aske (political leader)

Robert Aske (* 1500, † July 12, 1537 ) was an English jurist.

Life and career

Raised in York, he moved to London soon, where he worked as a lawyer. He is regarded as one of the leaders of the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536 and had a large share of its almost non-violent course. After the temporary reprieve of the leader of the pilgrimage Aske was ordered to report to King Henry VIII to London to present his concerns. With a renewed flare of rebellion Aske on 17 May of treason was found guilty. Finally, Aske was arrested and taken to the Tower. Without lawful trial, he was sentenced to death, transferred on 28 June to York and there hanged in public on July 12, 1537.
