Robert Bartlett (historian)

Robert Bartlett ( born 1950 ) is an English historian and medievalist.

Life

Bartlett studied at Peterhouse College, University of Cambridge, at St John 's College, Oxford and Princeton University and has received research fellowships at several institutions, including the University of Michigan and the Georg -August- University Göttingen and taught at the University of Edinburgh, University of Chicago and the University of St. Andrews, where he currently resides.

He currently holds the Wardlaw Professor of Medieval History at the University of St Andrews. He is currently considered one of the world's leading experts in medieval history. His work The Making of Europe: Conquest, Colonization and Cultural Change, 950-1350 ( German: " The birth of Europe from the spirit of violence" ) was awarded in 1993 with the Wolfson History Prize. His main areas of scientific research are the history of colonization in the Middle Ages, the cult of saints and the history of England from the 11th to the 14th century.

He held the 2007 Ford lectures at Oxford. For British television he wrote and presented the series Inside the medieval mind, a four-part BBC documentary, broadcast in 2008 as part of a series on the Middle Ages.
