Robert de Beaumont, 4th Earl of Leicester

Robert de Beaumont, 4th Earl of Leicester († 1204) was an Anglo -Norman nobleman and Lord High Steward of England. He was a son of Robert de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Leicester, and the Pétronille ( Pernel ) de Grandmesnil. After his mother he was also called " FitzPernel ".

Robert joined in 1190 the wake of King Richard the Lionheart for the third Crusade. In this his father had pulled ahead and died last year. The news of his death reached Robert in February 1191 Sicilian Messina, where the main army wintered and where he was now invested by the King by knighting the new Earl of Leicester. In the Holy Land, he took part, among others, at the Battle of Arsuf.

In the fight against King Philip II Augustus Robert came in 1193 in captivity, from which he was only in 1196 released. To this end he had to give up his lying in Normandy owned by Breteuil.

Married Robert was with Loretta de Braose ( † around 1266 ), a daughter of William de Braose. The couple had no children. After his death he was buried in the choir of the Abbey of Leicester ( Saint Mary de Pratis ). Since he had no heir, he bequeathed his estate to each of one half of his sisters, Amice and Margaret. The title of the Earl of Leicester and the office of Lord High Steward, he bequeathed it to the son of Amice Simon de Montfort.
