Robert de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Leicester

Robert " ès Blanche Mains " de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Leicester († August 31, 1190 ) was an Anglo -Norman nobleman and Lord High Steward of England in the 12th century. His nickname is " with white hands ".

He was a son of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester, and Amice de Gaël. In 1168 his father died, he took over his legacy as the Earl of Leicester, by his mother he inherited the castle of Breteuil in Normandy.

Robert joined in April 1173 revolt of the King's eldest son, the young King Henry, against King Henry II to. After Breteuil was destroyed in the September of the year by the King, Robert fled to the allied with him Count Philip of Flanders. From this he received an army of 8,000 Flemish mercenaries provided, with which he, landed on 29 September at Walton ( Suffolk ) on the English coast. In 1189, Robert took the cross for the third crusade. Instead of the British main army to pull under King Richard the Lionheart, he joined an advance party of French knights.
