Robert Grant (MP)

Sir Robert Grant ( * 1779 in Bengal, India, † July 9, 1838 in Dalpoorie ) was a British politician and author of the still well-known hymn O Worship the King.

At the age of six years, the family moved from India to England. Robert Grant was, like his brother Charles, Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and lawyer. From 1818 to 1834 he represented various constituencies in parliament, where he used mainly for the equality of the Jews.

In June 1834 he was appointed Governor of Bombay, where he made ​​a name for himself through his social commitment and the construction of some roads linking the city and the hinterland. He died on July 9, 1838 at the age of 59 years in India.

Grant wrote a study on the history of the East India Company, whose CEO was his father, and today is best known for its hymns, the most famous O Worship the King, is known.

Grant was popular in India. Because of its social commitment was the second oldest medical school in India, the Grant Medical College, named after him.
