List of Governors of Bombay

After the founding of the Bombay Presidency as a province of British India placed the crown Abraham Shipman in 1664 as a first governor of Bombay. 1668, the city to the British East India Company was assigned, which then moved its headquarters from Surat to Bombay. They appointed George Oxedender to their first Governor of Bombay. The region was at that time an archipelago of small islands, forming a small enclave on the west coast of India.

Following the extension of British rule in the hinterland of the post of governor gained in importance. 1803 was the Bombay Presidency only from the islands of Salsette and Bombay and the cities of Surat and Bankot. In 1947 the area became part of the independent state of India. The government appointed Raja Maharaj Singh as India's first Governor. In 1950, the Bombay State was established, including the former princely states. After Bombay in 1956 further enlarged territorial, on May 1, 1960, the spin-off of the new state of Gujarat and the renaming of the remaining area in the state of Maharashtra. The post of Governor of Bombay was abolished and continued as governor of Maharashtra.
