Robert Long (singer)

Robert Long (actually January Gerrit Bob Arend Leverman; born October 22, 1943 in Utrecht, † December 13, 2006 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch singer-songwriter.

Life

Jan Leverman completed after school training as a window dresser and sang in passing in an amateur band whose music was influenced by the beat and the early 1960s. His Unit Gloria had success with Dutch hits. This, however, it was too boring and he began to write his own lyrics. Leverman changed his name because of its body length of 1.92 m Robert Long and had the early 1970s became a successful songwriter. His first LP he released in the Netherlands in 1974. His success in Germany began in 1981 with his second German LP Homo Sapiens. His Dutch texts were translated into German by Michael Kunze. Long wrote out the lyrics and the music itself and worked together with the successful composer and arranger Erik van der Wurff.

Robert Long known from the beginning of his career to open his homosexuality. His lyrics are largely autobiographical inspired. He had his biggest successes in Germany in the early 1980s with songs such as festivals guys, If you were to ask me once and Permissive. Fixed guys was also taken up by Katja Ebstein there for her album Hey you. He also sang the theme song of the television series Q & Q and the Dutch title tune of the children's series Gummi Bears.

After it had been only a few days earlier announced that he had not long to live, Robert Long died in 2006 from cancer.
