Robert Morison

Robert Morison ( * 1620 in Aberdeen, † November 10, 1683 in London) was a Scottish botanist and physician. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Morison ".

Life

Robert Morison completed his training in Aberdeen and his PhD there in 1638 as a doctor of philosophy. He was interested in botany and medicine and began with these areas and to deal professionally.

In 1648 he acquired in Angers the title Doctor of Medicine. On the recommendation of the royal botanist Vespasien Robin, he was administrator of the gardens in 1650 by Jean -Baptiste Gaston, Duke of Orléans, Blois. During this time he visited some French territories in search of new and rare plants.

1660, after the death of the Duke of Orléans, he was invited by Charles II to England, the title of " Royal physician " gave him and appointed royal professor of botany.

1669 he was appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Oxford and elected shortly thereafter as a member of the Royal College of Physicians.

Robert Morison died on November 10, 1683 as the result of an accident, he suffered the day before.

Ehrentaxon

Charles Plumier named in his honor the plant genus Morisona from the family of caper plants ( Capparaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name.
