Robert Olby

Robert Cecil Olby ( born October 4, 1933, Beckenham, Kent ) is a professor at the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh.

As a former lecturer at the University of Leeds in England Robert Olby is known as an expert in the history of biology in the 19th and 20th centuries. His specialties are genetics and molecular biology. He has contributed to the 50th anniversary of decoding the structure of DNA written and is also a frequent participant in popular scientific publications. His biography of Francis Crick, which was written with support from the National Science Foundation and a Fellowship Archives of Churchill College, Cambridge, was not published until after his death by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press due to protests Crick. The work on this biography was one of the highlights in the scientific career Olbys because he for the drafting of the work numerous interviews with leading scientists like John Desmond Bernal, Sydney Brenner, Francis Crick, Aaron Klug, Max Perutz, James D. Watson and Maurice Wilkins led. His most significant contribution to the history of biology in the 20th century is the book, The Path to the Double Helix: The Discovery of DNA, which was first published in 1974 and enlarged by the author in 1994 in a second edition. The comprehensive work "The History of the University of Cambridge " takes on direct reference to Olbys posts.
