Robert Sharples (classicist)

Robert W. Sharples ( Call Name: Bob; born May 28, 1949 in Beckenham, Kent; † August 11, 2010 in Northwood, London ) was a British classical scholar.

Sharples attended Dulwich College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied classical philology. 1972-73 he was a Research Fellow at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. In 1978 he acquired with his work Studies in the De Fato of Alexander of Aphrodisias doctorate ( Ph.D. ) and taught at University College London, where he was Professor of Classical Philology in 2009 until his retirement.

Sharples ' research priorities were ancient philosophy, especially that of the natural philosophers, ancient science and the Peripatetic school. He worked since 1980 with the Project Theophrastus, the Greek, Latin and Arabic texts, translations and commentaries collected and edited the Peripatetic Theophrastus. Since his thesis he dealt with Alexander of Aphrodisias, whose work De anima libri mantissa he has re- issued in 2006; in 2004 he published an English translation of the work. Together with Sophia Kapetanaki he published the first three books of the Problemata Inedita of Aristotle. Together with Philip van der Eijk he has a 2008 revision of the English translation and commentary of the main work of the späntantiken Christian philosophers Nemesio of Emesa De natura hominis ( On the Nature of Man ) issued. Sharples was a member of the editorial board of peripatoi and Rutgers University Studies in Classical Humanities.

Sharples ' lectures dealt with ancient philosophy and philosophical literature from Plato, Cicero and Lucretius as well as Greek and Latin stylistics.
