Robert Smythson

Robert Smythson (* 1536, † 1614 in Wollaton ) was an English architect and is considered the most significant representative of the Elizabethan style.

Life

Little is known about the life of Smythson. He was chief architect of Longleat House ( 1567-80 ), and lived in Wollaton later. Smythson left many plans and drawings from which it some houses are attributed in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. His most important work was Wollaton Hall ( 1580-88 ). He followed one of Sebastiano Serlio inspired, modified Renaissance style. His designs are characterized by the emphasis of many large windows, by their symmetry and fineness.
