Robert Twigger

Robert Twigger ( born January 1, 1965 in Brno, Czech Republic) is a British poet, writer and adventurer. He currently lives in Cairo, Egypt.

Life

Robert Twigger studied at Balliol College, Oxford. He first began to study engineering, but changed after six weeks to politics, philosophy and economics. His education, however was not very successful - he finished it only with an ordinary degree without honors from which he was the only one in his class. His extracurricular activities, however, were more successful. So he won the Newdigate Prize, directed a film festival for student films and turned himself two films. After graduating, he worked in the PR department of a record company, and taught for three years in Japan, the English language. Twigger wrote several fiction and non-fiction books and articles for the Daily Telegraph, the men magazine Maxim and Esquire magazine.

Works

  • Angry White Pyjamas: An Oxford Poet Trains With The Tokyo Riot Police ( 1997) is a book about Twiggers experiences in Japan. Main theme of the book is the Senshusei Course, a training program of Yoshinkan Aikido training for the police in Tokyo. He received for this book the Somerset Maugham Award and William Hill Sports Book of the Year. The book was in 2007 awarded by Waterstone's as the best sports book of the past 25 years.
  • Big Snake: The Hunt for the World 's Longest Python ( 1999) describes Twiggers unsuccessful attempt to catch a 30 foot long line, for which a price of $ 50,000 was suspended.
  • The Extinction Club (2001) describes Twiggers research of David deer, a deer race, of which was believed to be extinct.
  • Being a Man ( in the lousy modern world) (2002) describes Twiggers thoughts about the nature of masculinity and their position at the beginning of the 21st century.
  • Voyageur - Across the Rocky Mountains in a Birchbark Canoe (2006) tells the story of Twiggers three years long two thousand -mile journey through northwest Canada in the footsteps of the explorer and trapper Alexander MacKenzie.

Expeditions

Twiggers failed attempt to catch the record-breaking snake, was the subject of a Channel 4 documentary, which was called Big Snake wears just like the book.

In 2004, Twigger took part in an expedition which took a trip through Canada in the footsteps of the explorer and trapper Alexander MacKenzie. The group was the first since 1973, which made ​​the journey in birch bark canoes.
