Robert Valentine (composer)

Robert Valentine ( Robert Follentine ) (* January 16, 1674 in Leicester, † after 1735) was an English flautist and composer.

Life

Robert Valentine comes from an English family of musicians, his father was Thomas Follentine, who worked from 1670 in Leicester and moved due to uncertain positions in the 1690s to Rome. From 1707 Robert Valentine is mentioned several times as a recorder player and oboist at concerts at Palazzo Ruspoldi, where at that time Arcangelo Corelli, Antonio Caldara and Handel performed their works. Valentine worked as a flutist and composer in Rome, among other things, he was in the service of Sir Thomas Samwell. Whether Valentine is as expected has returned to his homeland in 1730, has not been established, although the publisher Walsh published at this time works Valentines. Maybe Valentine stayed in Amsterdam in 1735 to revive his acquaintance with Pietro Locatelli, this forms an important link between the Italian composer and Dutch publishers.

He created numerous sonatas for violin, some concerti grossi and besides some other works mainly compositions for flute in various occupations.
