Roberto Bernardi

Roberto Bernardi ( born May 18, 1974 in Todi, Italy) is one of the most recognized contemporary photorealist. As a child himself Bernardi dealt with the painting, and wrote his first oil paintings. He devoted himself to detailed pictorial representations of landscapes and portraits, which should have a major influence on his artistic development later in his early studies. Following the completion of high school he moved to Rome in 1993, where he worked as a restorer in the church of San Francesco a Ripa. As a painter himself Bernardi devoted at this time mainly of landscape and portrait painting, and at the end of the 1990s dealt increasingly with hyper-realistic representations. Bernardi succeeded in a remarkable way to use traditional oil painting to a contemporary genre. She now lives and works in Roberto Bernardi Todi. Since 2006, Bernardi works with his partner, Raphaella Spence, also in community works. It is presented at the Bernarducci Meisel Gallery in New York.

Works

Starting from traditional, classical landscape paintings, portraits and still life, Bernardi has turned the photo realism only in the late 1990s. At that time, he has begun to kompositionieren realistic elements and photograph and the image transmitted to them in oil on canvas. During the transfer, he used the traditional techniques of oil painting and let so that a realistic picture emerge. Instead of the entire composition already projecting as a photograph onto the canvas and then repaint, followed by the personal translation of the subjects and the painting technique that he used for a classic line, as we know from the paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Today Bernardi is known for his photo-realistic still life. The classical composition of the object arrays in combination with the strong emphasis on light and color contrasts, makes his painting unique. The light in his paintings seem to radiate from the individual intrinsic objects themselves.

The picturesque detention of everyday subjects such as a chewing gum machine, a refrigerator equipment, a filled dishwasher, that distinguishes him from the contemporary Photorealists thematically from and recall images of photorealistic precursors such as Charles Bell, David Parrish or Linda Bacon.
