Roberto Duarte Silva

Roberto Duarte da Silva ( * 1837 in Ribeira Grande, Santo Antao, † 1889 in Paris ) was a Cape Verdean chemist.

Career

Roberto Duarte Silva began at the age of 14 years as an apprentice in a pharmacy. Later he came to Lisbon. He worked there in the farmácia Azevedo and studied at the Escola de farmácia. For some years he lived in Macao and Hong Kong, where he led their own pharmacy. In 1863 he went to Paris. He graduated from there to study physics and then worked in laboratories. At the same time he taught at the École des Mines de Paris, the École centrale des arts et manufactures and the École supérieure de physique et de chimie de la ville de Paris industrial. After all, he himself was scientifically active, particularly in the field of organic chemistry.

Duarte Silva was honored by the French Academy of Sciences in 1885, the Prix Jecker. In 1887 he became president of the Société française de chimie. He was a professor of chemist Charles Lepierre, who in 1888 settled on his suggestion in Portugal.
