Robyn Denny

Robyn Denny, (born 3 October 1930 in Abinger, Surrey, England, lives in London ) is a British painter and printmaker. He belongs to the legendary group of British artists to British art in the late 1950s gave an international status. He studied at the Royal College of Art in the mid-1950s, in a generation that was inspired by Abstract Expressionism, American films, popular culture and urban modernity, only the abstract painting recognized as the only conceivable artistic way. He is a representative of the hard-edge painting.

Life and work

From 1950 to 1954 he studied in Paris and at St. Martin's School of Art in London, followed by two years service in the Royal Navy. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1957 he received a scholarship to study in Italy, was a guest lecturer at the Hammersmith School of Art at the Slade School of Art and at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham.

His artistic career includes participation in groundbreaking exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States. These include a retrospective at the Tate Gallery (1973 ); 'Place ' ( Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, 1959); ' Situation ' (RBA Galleries, London, 1960); participation in the documenta III in Kassel in 1964 in the department " aspects of 1964"; ' London: the New Scene' (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Minneapolis and the North American Tour, 1965); Venice Biennale, 1966 and ' The Sixties Art Scene in London ' ( Barbican Art Gallery, London, 1993).

In 1981, Denny moved to Los Angeles, and only returned in the 1990s to London. In California, he found a congenial urban environment and a natural light for his art, including the infamous smog, which enabled him to develop a new artistic aesthetics.

His works are part of many public and private collections, including the Daimler Chrysler Collection, Berlin; the Tate Gallery, London; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; The Museum of Modern Art in New York City; Chase Manhattan Bank, New York; The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis or the National Gallery of Australia, Sydney.
