Rock chapel (VÅ¡emily)

The Rock Chapel ( Skalni kaple ) is a chapel in Všemily ( Schemmel ) in the Czech Republic, which was built into it entirely in a hollowed-out rock. It is one of the most remarkable religious monuments of the Bohemian Switzerland.

Description

The unique chapel was worked out entirely from a free-standing, reminiscent of a loaf of bread sandstone block. From the outside, only a small cross and the two windows are visible. Inside, only the ingress of moisture above reminded that the chapel was carved out of the bare rock.

Together with the surrounding Umgebindehäusern forms the chapel is a remarkable ensemble of folk architecture in northern Bohemia. Immediately upstream is the old school house Schemmel, which really stand out for its size and the small bell tower on the roof.

History

The chapel was first mentioned in the list of crosses and statues of the parish parish Windisch Kamnitz in 1835:

A non-public hewn into rock chapel, inside the image of St. Ignatius. It stands to reason Bauer. Your founder lives in Kaltenbach and from the community, no one wants to take over the patronage of her since she is of stone, damp, and soon everything is subject to corruption in it.

Amazingly, the chapel was still preserved to our days. Even after the expulsion of the German population after the Second World War were among the new inhabitants of the village people who preserved the chapel of the impending devastation and destruction. Today, the chapel is under the care of the Local Authority Jetřichovice ( Dittersbach ), belongs to the Všemily today.
