Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt

Rodrigo Arenas Betancur ( born October 23, 1919 in Fredonia, in the province of Antioquia in Colombia; † 12 May 1995 Medellín ) was a Colombian writer and sculptor.

Arenas Betancur grew up as a farmer's son, and later became a writer and sculptor. He studied at the " Instituto de bellas artes de Medellín " in Medellín.

Arenas Betancur began his career as a Christ - figures - carvers in Colombia and later in Mexico, where he performed mainly government contracts at the beginning. He also wrote for some magazines during this time.

From the 1950s Rodrigo Arenas Betancur began the study of monumental sculpture; Clients were mostly the state or large corporations. Popular subjects for his works were national freedom fighters and heroes; especially in Colombia. He was abducted by alleged drug gangsters and jailed for three months in 1993.
