Roger Ballen

Roger Ballen (* 1950 in New York City ) is an American photographer.

Life and work

Bales lives in South Africa, where it has brought him in 1974 for the first time since the 1970s. He worked there as a geologist, what brought him to the Dorp, remote villages of the whites, which he photographed. He documented the poor dwellings from the outside first, and later also from the inside, and finally its inhabitants. During this time, the well-known double portrait Dresie and Casie was born. The documentation of poor white by bales did not like the apartheid regime allegedly. Nevertheless, Bale continued to seek after forbidden places, like Shadow Chamber, boarding house and Asylum. All of these are places in which multiple injured people had taken refuge. The inhabitants were ready to play in productions of bales, so his style of documentary photography mutated into fiction. It produced images of particular drama.
