Palm Springs Art Museum

The Palm Springs Art Museum, which was created in 1982 from the Palm Springs Desert Museum, is the Regional Museum of Art, Science and Performing Arts and the main museum facility for the city of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley in Riverside County, California, United States.

History

1938, the Palm Springs Desert Museum in today's downtown Palm Springs was established. It dealt primarily with the presentation of the Colorado Desert in the southwestern United States and the culture of the indigenous population, which lived here before contact with the Europeans, such as the Cahuilla. After the Second World War, the museum found a new place in a former military hospital. 1952 a scientific open-air exhibition and a botanical garden were connected to the museum.

For the Department of Fine Art to the Museum were asked 1958 930 m² of exhibition space and 1962, the museum received a lecture hall and other rooms for exhibitions with contemporary art. In 1976, a third place for a museum expanded with 7,000 sqm area and a hall with over 400 seats, the Annenberg Theatre, found, which was enlarged in 1982 to a grand piano. Since that time called the Museum Palm Springs Art Museum.
