Rogier van Otterloo

Rogier van Otterloo ( born December 11, 1941 in Amsterdam, † January 29, 1988 in Bilthoven ) was a Dutch jazz big band leader, arranger and composer

He was the eldest son of the composer and conductor Willem van Otterloo (1907 - 1978). First, he learned drums and played in 1955 in the " Orion Jazz Band " (with the "Dutch Swing College Band " as an example ). In 1958 he founded with his classmates, the jazz singer Edwin Rutten ( born 1943 ), a separate " Gold Coast Combo". After graduation in 1962, he was during his military service in the Royal Military Chapel ( KMK) and took his Gold Coast band participated in military - jazz competitions. Thereafter, he attended the Music Lyceum in Amsterdam, with flute and music theory as a main subject, Piano Minor at Hans Henkemans. Even then he wrote the way music for plays. 1966/7 he was a pianist in Lurelei Cabaret, where he accompanied comedians like Jasperina de Jong and Gerard Cox. At the same time began a collaboration with the blind composer, singer, pianist and songwriter Jules de Corte (1924 - 1996), whom he considered his own words as his musical mentor, eg for TV projects.

In the 1970s, he was director of the orchestra " Grand Gala du Disque Populaire " (on the occasion of the award of the Edison Prize ). At the same time he became the most successful Dutch film composers, especially for the hit films " Turks Fruit" ( Turkish Delight ) by Paul Verhoeven ( 1973) and " Soldaat van Oranje " (directed by Paul Verhoeven, 1977, as Turks Fruit also with Rutger Hauer ). Other film scores he wrote for " Grijpstra en De Gier " (based on the detective novels by Jan Willem van de Wetering ) ( 1979), "Help, de Doctor Verzuipt! " (1974), " Juliana 70 " (1979), " Keetje Runaway " (directed by Paul Verhoeven, 1975). He published with Pim Jacobs plate " Music All In" and arranged for Rita Reys.

In 1980 he became the director of the Linden Metropole Orkest, whose repertoire he advanced in the direction of pop music as a successor to Dolf van. His successor in 1991 was to 2005 Dick Bakker, with whom he worked back in the 1960s as this sound engineer. In addition, in the 1980s, was five times Conductor for the Dutch contribution to the Euro Vision Song Contest. Otterloo died in 1988 after a long illness with cancer.

Otterloo won in 1971 and posthumously in 1988 an Edison ( music award ).
