Romain Weingarten

Romain Weingarten ( born December 5, 1926 in Paris, † 13 July, 2006 Challans ) was a French dramatist.

Life

Weingarten spent his childhood in Brittany. After attending high school in Château -Thierry, he studied philosophy at the Sorbonne. In 1948 he wrote his first play with Akara. Weingarten was influenced in the first years, especially by Antonin Artaud. His work was also inspired by the Surrealists and Roger Vitrac. Only in 1961 he wrote another piece: Les Nourrices. But despite the support of Eugene Ionesco, the play was not a great success. The breakthrough he achieved in 1966 with L' Été (German Summer ), which was his greatest success. Occasionally, he was involved in the performance of his pieces as a director and actor.
