Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lomé

The Archdiocese of Lomé (Latin Archidioecesis Lomensis ) is an archbishopric in Togo and seat of the Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of Togo. The Archdiocese covers 3682 km ² and 1.5 million inhabitants, of whom about 28 % Roman Catholic faith. In the 36 parishes of the Archdiocese in 2004 had 98 diocesan priests and 52 religious priests.

History

The Archdiocese of Lomé was spun off as Apostolic Prefecture of the Apostolic Prefecture of Dahomey built in 1883 (now Benin) on 12 April 1892. On March 16, 1914, was raised to the apostolic vicariate, first Vicar Apostolic was Franz Wolf. After the spin-off of the Apostolic Prefecture Sokodé on May 18, 1937, the Vicariate Apostolic of Togo was renamed on 14 June 1938 in Lomé Apostolic Vicariate. On September 14, 1955, the survey was conducted to the archbishopric. The dioceses Atakpamé (1964 ) and Aného and Kpalimé (both 1994) were carved out of the Archdiocese.
