Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Salta

The Archdiocese of Salta (Latin: Archidioecesis Saltensis, Spanish: Arquidiócesis de Salta ) is a location in Argentina Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Salta.

History

The Diocese of Salta was established on March 28, 1806 by Pope Pius VII with the Papal Bull Regalium principum out of territory of the diocese of Córdoba and the Archdiocese of La Plata o Charcas a suffragan. On March 5, 1865, the Diocese of Salta was the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires is a suffragan. The Diocese of Salta announced on February 15, 1987 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Tucumán. On 20 April 1934 further cession of territory was the foundation of the Diocese of Jujuy.

On April 20, 1934, the Diocese of Salta was by Pope Pius XI. raised to an archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Salta announced on April 10, 1961 from parts of its territory to the founding of the diocese of Oran. A further transfer of territory on September 8, 1969 on the establishment of the Territorialprälatur Cafayate.

The Archbishop José Roberto Tavella SDB was the founder of the Catholic University of Salta.
