Roman Catholic Diocese of Feldkirch

The Diocese of Feldkirch (Latin Dioecesis Campitemplensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Austria, which is responsible for the state of Vorarlberg ( with the exception of the territory of the Territorial Abbey Wettingen - Mehrerau ). It has its headquarters in Feldkirch and belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province of Salzburg.

History

The land was originally part of Vorarlberg in the south to the diocese of Chur, in the north of the diocese of Constance and the North East to the diocese of Augsburg. Emperor Joseph II tried unsuccessfully to influence the foreign dioceses off. It was only in 1816 had the bishopric of Chur and in 1819 the diocese of Constance its shares in the diocese of Brixen cede. In Vorarlberg only a general vicariate was established with its headquarters in Feldkirch, the vicars-general were also auxiliary bishops.

Since after the First World War, lying in South Tyrol Brixen came to Italy, 1921, the Apostolic Administration of Innsbruck - Feldkirch was created, which was directly in 1925 the Holy See.

On 6 August 1964, the Apostolic Administration of Innsbruck diocese was raised, which was initially assumed also the area of Vorarlberg.

On December 8 of 1968, Pope Paul VI. with the Bull caritas Christi diocese of Feldkirch. Bruno Wechner became the first diocesan bishop of Feldkirch.
