Roman Catholic Diocese of Gibraltar

The Diocese of Gibraltar (Latin: Dioecesis gibraltariensis ) is situated in the British colony of Gibraltar Roman Catholic diocese.

History

The area around Gibraltar was part of the Diocese of Cádiz and is thus legally divorced from its origins, a part of the Catholic Church in Spain, but by the membership of Gibraltar from 1713 to the British Empire from her. The majority of the population of Gibraltar was still Catholic. The Anglican Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe also operates from Gibraltar, but is responsible for the whole of continental Europe.

Built in 1816 Vicariate Apostolic of Gibraltar was raised on 19 November 1910 a name immediately diocese.

In 2002, the Diocese of Gibraltar, which covers the whole of Gibraltar, 16 diocesan priests, religious priests 1 and 5 sisters counted in 5 parishes. While the number of women religious of the city decreases, the diocese has made to diocesan priests a certain growth, but in the past there were hardly more than ten.

In the diocese is the Marian shrine of "Our Lady of Europe ".
