Bernard Patrick Devlin

Bernard Patrick Devlin ( born March 10, 1921 in Youghal, Irish Republic, † December 15 2010 in Gibraltar) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar.

Life

Bernard Patrick Devlin attended from 1927 to the Loreto Convent in Youghal in 1927 and from 1933 a school of Christian Brothers. After graduating from the Cistercian College Dublin in 1939, he studied at the Pontifical Beda College in Liverpool. He received on 9 December 1945 in the Portsmouth Cathedral ordination. As of June 22, 1946, he worked in Gibraltar in 1974 as pastor of St. Theresa and in 1975 as Vicar General in Gibraltar.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on October 20, 1984 Bishop of Gibraltar. The Pope himself gave him on January 6, 1985 at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Eduardo Martínez Somalo, Substitute of the Secretariat of State, and Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy, secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

On February 14, 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related. He died on 15 December 2010 and was buried on 17 December of the same year in the crypt of the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned, Gibraltar.

Devlin was invested on March 30, 1985 in the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned the Commander with Star ( KCHS ) of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem. He was a knight of the Order of St Michael and St George.
