Roman Catholic Diocese of Grand-Bassam
The Diocese of Grand- Bassam (Latin: Dioecesis Bassam Maiori ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Grand- Bassam on the Ivory Coast in West Africa.
History
The first Catholic missions in the Ivory Coast in the 17th century were unsuccessful. In 1893 the country became a French colony. The first governor, Louis- Gustave Binger called, though himself a Protestant, the Catholic missionaries into the country. The Society of African Missions of Lyons, then came the first and landed on October 28, 1895 in Grand- Bassam and founded the first churches. The area of the diocese belonged to the Archbishopric of Abidjan, before it was collected on June 8, 1982 bishopric.
