Roman Catholic Diocese of Panevėžys

The Diocese of Panevėžys (Latin: Dioecesis Panevezensis, lit Panevėžio vyskupija. ) Is a diocese in the northeastern part of Lithuania and the Roman Catholic Church in Lithuania.

Bishop is Lionginas Virbalas (since 2013).

History

The diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Vilnius and was due, published on April 4, 1926 apostolic constitution by Pope Pius XI. founded. This regulated the adjustment of administrative boundaries of the Roman Catholic church in the Baltic states to the former political boundaries. After the Diocese of Panevėžys was separated on 6 April 1926 by the Diocese of Polotsk (jointly with the Diocese of Kaišiadorys ), it belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province since October 1926 Vilnius.

On 8 May 1997, a branch of the Diocese of Panevėžys for formation of more Western Diocese of Šiauliai was separated.
