Roman Catholic Diocese of Paramaribo

The Diocese of Paramaribo (Latin: Dioecesis Paramariboënsis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Paramaribo in Suriname.

History

Pope Pius VII founded on 22 November 1817, the Apostolic Prefecture of Dutch Guyana - Suriname territorial concessions from the mission sui juris Batavia. The Prefecture Apostolic was raised on September 12, 1842 the Vicariate Apostolic of Dutch Guyana - Suriname. On May 7, 1958, received its present name and became the diocese, which reported immediat the Holy See raised. With the Papal Bull Si quis ments it was placed under the Archbishopric of Port of Spain as suffragan on 29 July 1968.

Since 1865, Pope Pius IX familiar. the mission in Suriname to the Redemptorists, who provided all the Vicars Apostolic ever since. The most famous Redemptorist, who worked as a missionary in Suriname, was Peerke Donders (1809-1887), who worked on the river Coppename in the leper colony Batavia and was beatified in 1982. His remains were transferred in 1900 Cathedral of Batavia in a grave in the St. Peter and Paul. The built in the period 1883 to 1885 Cathedral to be the largest wooden Gothic church in the world. After years of difficult restoration work, the church building was taken into use on 14 November 2010 with a Mass and blessing consecration by Bishop Wilhelmus de Bekker again solemnly.
